Dr William Gunn and his wife lived on the Isle of Futuna from 1883-1917 as Presbetaryian missionaries. Futuna has been described as the ‘Gateway’ to the gospel in Vanuatu, the first in this group of islands where inhabitants accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ. The book is structured as a series of character portraits, men and women of different ages, and their gradual conversion to Christian faith and lifestyle. “Their failures have not been concealed, in order that their portraits may be true to life”. The stories are richly embedded with ethnological information on manners, customs, and beliefs of the native people prior to colonisation.

“[This book] makes an important contribution to our understanding of the changing role of women in society. It draws on a unique Australia-wide longitudinal study of men and women, both in the paid workforce and in the home. From an initial set of 5000 17 year-olds surveyed in 1973, the educational and career paths of 3000 were followed through to 1982 and, of these, 30 were the subject of a qualitative in-depth study from childhood through to 1990. The authors use this rich data to explore the range of factors that influence women’s careers and their career choices.” (publisher’s blurb)
