But, filled as it is with honest and unapologetic lessons on what Australia needed, then and now, he wrote an Australian political biography that is also a true national classic. -

Jack Lang was the Labor Premier of New South Wales during much of the Great Depression, and was one of that state’s most controversial politicians, with his call to repudiate Australia’s debts. His long running dispute with Prime Minister Joseph Lyons ended with his dismissal in 1932 by NSW Governor Philip Game. The Great Bust forms the second volume of his justifications for his actions, while criticising Robert Menzies and others, including members of the Labor movement.

An early history of the Eight Hours Movement (including Australia) and summary of available research with index and bibliography, which argues that a compulsory eight hour day should be introduced across industry. Sidney James Webb, 1st Baron Passfield, (1859-1947) who co-founded the London School of Economics was a British socialist, economist, and reformer. He was an early member of the Fabian Society and the Labour Party for which he wrote ‘Clause IV’, which committed the Party to public ownership of industry. Harold Cox (1859-1936) was a Liberal MP from 1906 to 1910. He lectured on Political Economy for Cambridge University Extension Society. He later ran against the Liberals as he was against the idea of people getting something for nothing, although he thought the government should ensure a minimum standard of life.

Claude Marquet (1869-1920) was a self-taught Australian cartoonist, whose works appeared in the Adelaide weekly magazine, Quiz, the Bulletin, Table Talk, and the Melbourne Punch, but most notably in the Australian Worker, whose principles of worker solidarity he shared. This book was published for the benefit of his widow, after his untimely death in a boating accident.
