Mademoiselle Javotte, a work of little morality, written by herself, and published by one of her friends. An anonymous tale (often attributed to Paul Baret / Paul Barrett) in which the heroine engages in sex work to escape poverty. A racy reworking of a closely titled 1757 moral work, whereas this one has little. This copy illustrated with 2 erotic etchings. -

First French translation of the important Dutch obstetrics manual by Jan Bernard Jacobs (1734-1790). At the time of its appearance, it was one of the most complete treatises on the art of childbirth and remained a standard work into the middle of the nineteenth century being described as a pearl of scientific production from the last years before the French Revolution. -

A relic of the Utrecht sodomy trials, the large scale persecution of homosexual men in the Netherlands starting in 1730. Without author or publisher, literally the title translated to [All the copies of summonses, as well as all the poems applicable to the present time], listing of men accused of sodomy, with charges and sentences, many of death, accompanied by long moralistic poems on the depravity of the crime. 2 parts in one, the second part, Vervolg op alle de Copyen, being a continuation. This copy with the second part ending at page 94 with the final charge in October of 1730 and ending with the poem by P. Schim. Copies of various sizes are noted of part 2, perhaps indicating different issues, from page 94 to 151 the list continues to 1731, perhaps being issued later. -

Primarily regarded as surgeon, Bell is considered to be the first Scottish scientific surgeon. His scientific approach is especially evident in this treatise in which he convincingly argues, against the prevailing medical opinion of the time, that gonorrhea and syphilis are separate diseases. Bell’s work is foundational to the modern understanding of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The rare Second Edition, corrected and enlarged. -

The final and most comprehensive edition of the Dictionnaire de Trevoux, so nicknamed because of its original publication in the town of Trevoux. The original 1704 edition, assumed to be directed by the Jesuits, was largely derived from the 1701 edition of Antoine Furetiere’s 1690 Dictionnaire universel. From the much expanded second edition it became widely used and was a major inspiration for Ephraim Chamber’s 1728 Cyclopaedia and the 1751-72 Encyclopedie, ou dictionnaire raisonne des sciences, des arts et des metiers. -

4 photographs mounted in a full leather presentation album showing a silver challenge shield and silver plate table piece of a model of Captain Cook’s ship, the Endeavour, which was gifted from The People of Australia to HMS Commonwealth, a King Edward VII-class battleship of the British Royal Navy at a naval review in 1911. The album contains the bookplate of lawyer, politician, and Federalist, Sir Josiah Henry Symon (1846-1934). Symon represented the Commonwealth Government at the review and made the presentation of the shield and table piece. Photographs by the S. A. Govt. Photolithographic Dept, A. Vaughan, Govt. A full set of the monumental Fox’s History of Queensland: An Historical and Commercial Review, Descriptive and Biographical Facts, Figures and Illustrations: An Epitome of Progress. Published in 3 volumes in 1919, 1921, and 1923, it is the largest historical work on Queensland and its colonial settler families ever produced. Despite known colloquially as Fox’s History of Queensland, and with the second and third volumes crediting him as the compiler, the first volume was edited by Phillip Champion de Crespigny and Ernest Sando Emerson, the second by Andrew Grant, and the third by G. G. Swann, together with countless unnamed writers and with contributions from various photographers. Rare as a complete set and with the original leather almost always worn and cracked, this set rebacked preserving the original boards and spinebacks. -

Exhibiting the General Principles of the Science in a Series of Beautifully Colored Diagrams, and Accompanied by Explanatory Essays, Embracing the Latest Views of the Subjects Illustrated. Edward Livingston Youmans (1821-1887) was an American scientific writer, editor, and lecturer, and founder of Popular Science magazine. Youmans’ Chemical Atlas is one of the 19th century’s pioneering publications of science popularization, with striking colour plates both conveying information and capturing the imagination, and was featured in the William Reese exhibition Stamped with a National Character: Nineteenth Century American Color Plate Books: “This chemistry textbook was a pioneering publication in the use of color to convey quantitative information”. There are recorded printings each year between 1854 and 1857. This 1856 edition being the third year of printing and from the collection of the renowned neurologist, author, and educator Dr. Oliver Sacks, with his bookplate laid in. -

The Second Isingrin Edition with commentary and woodcut maps by Sebastian Munster. A significant work of geography containing “the earliest representation of the north-west coast of America on a printed map” (Burden), as well as one of the earliest printed works to with a map showing Asia as a whole.
Some splitting to the upper joint though still firm. A small rub to the lower board. Early owner’s marks to the title page and with minor occasional marginalia. Leaf O2 and O4 with a small repair to the tail margin. A light waterstain to the top edge from about half way through to the end. Leaf Dd4 and the final few leaves including the final device leaf more significantly stained though still light. Good Condition. -

Westminster School: Past and Present

A history of the Westminster School in London, though also a recording of its past customs and a lengthy biographical recording of headmasters and numerous distinguished students, and personal reminiscences. Frederic H. Forshall was a Queen’s Scholar at Westminster and won a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge, but left after a year, moving to Sydney. He was part of the first cohort at The University of Sydney in 1852, and while still a student was appointed the University Librarian. In 1853 he was the first prizewinner for Greek verse composition which are printed here (pp. 358-360). Plates illustrating various interiors, Westminster beating Eton at rowing in 1845, and others. -

Ciceros’ treatise on how to live, behave, and observe moral obligations with a separately titled and paginated Fragments collected by Andrea Patricio. Includes index. Scarce Lyon imprint of d’Antoine Gryphius, the illegitimate son of German bookseller-printer Sebastian Gryphius.
Leather rubbed and chipped, the lower board soiled. 17th century motif design scribblings of Andreas Barques to the endpapers, the free of which are almost loose. Small stain to the top edge of the first and last 10 to 20 leaves. Minor marks elsewhere. Good Condition. -
